How to Stay on Top of Applications
1. Don't Limit the Number of Fields You Apply To
This may sound obvious, however, it is important to keep an open mind during the application process. Positions in companies that may be less heard of often actually need a greater number of quality applicants. Of course, there will be some limit to the number of applications you do, but apply for anything you have a genuine interest in. You never know where that position could lead if you are successful.
2. Create a Spreadsheet
Once you have compiled a list of the companies and positions you are wanting to apply for, make a spreadsheet! This should include the time you will need to set aside to complete the application, its deadline, what is needed for the application, and a checkbox to tick once it has been completed. After it is all laid out in front of you, it will seem more approachable as you can then break down your application process into manageable chunks.
3. Set Aside Time to Personalise Each Application to Fit the Company
While having a general scaffold for your CV, cover letters and general answers to commonly asked questions is handy, it is imperative to tailor these to the company you are applying to. The employers will be able to tell if you have put time and effort into researching the company and this will definitely pay off. You can do this by thoroughly researching the company's goals, policies, and recent news articles, as well as by taking an in-depth look into what they specifically want from their applicants.
Overall, the application process is difficult and time consuming. It is important to continually apply, keep on top of deadlines, and keep an ear out for all new opportunities. Moreover, don't be too disheartened if you don't hear back from everyone!
