Capital W: Yoga Session for SISTER2Sister

This year, Capital W has decided to partner with SISTER2sister and the UNSW Yoga Club to promote recognition of women’s wellbeing through a yoga session.

SISTER2sister is a mentoring and educational program for girls in need of a female role model to help them overcome their circumstances and empower them to reach their limitless potentials. The UNSW Yoga Club aims to deliver affordable yoga classes to students in UNSW and provide a safe and comfortable space for the practice of yoga.

In collaboration with SISTER2sister and the UNSW Yoga Club, the aim of Capital W’s yoga session event was to raise awareness and promote the significance of physical and mental wellbeing within our Capital W community.

Yoga has been proven to significantly enhance both physical and mental health. The physical movements and postures in yoga help to promote flexibility and reduce joint pain, back pain and arthritis pain. Preliminary research also shows that yoga may help with migraines, osteoporosis, balance and mobility issues, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, fibromyalgia, and ADHD. On the other hand, the practice of controlling the breath and short periods of deep relaxation or meditation alleviate natural anxiety and stress responses. Therefore, we decided that yoga aligned with our aim of promoting both physical and mental health.

An hour of the yoga session was held at Samuels Building with assistance from the UNSW Health Promotions. Students had the opportunity to learn yoga sequences that consisted of approximately 10 basic yoga postures including Pachimotanasa (Sitting Forward Bend) and Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose). The session ended on a high, with students eagerly asking for more information about future yoga sessions and SISTER2sister. The yoga event gave a new start to Capital W members who are finding ways to relieve study stress, and an opportunity for existing yoga club members to further explore women empowerment and continue to raise awareness of mental health and women’s wellbeing.

Capital W Annual Dinner 2019: She Means Business

Capital W’s Annual Dinner 2019 took place on June 11th in the stunning Doltone House venue. With more than 200 students, alumni and industry representatives in attendance, the banquet room was bustling with excitement. The night started with open networking over canapes where 109 students had the opportunity to gain insights from representatives over a range of industries including, investment banking, professional services, consulting, retail & constitutional banks and, data & technology. 

Students then had the opportunity to rotate between two sponsor tables of their preference, for their main course and dessert. “The chance to talk one-on-one with business leaders was really valuable as we could learn about their experiences and ask for their advice,” a student attendee shared.

 

The highlight of the night was Deanne Stewart’s keynote speech. Deanne Stewart joined First State Super as the Chief Executive Officer in 2018. She has more than 20 years of leadership experience in financial services in superannuation and insurance sectors in Australia and internationally. This includes years as Managing Director with Merrill Lynch Investment Management in New York, and as an Engagement Manager with McKinsey and Company in London. She graduated from UNSW with a degree in Commerce (Finance and Marketing) and holds an MBA from the Yale School of Management as a Fulbright Scholar.

 

Imparting her wisdom with the audience, Deanne divided her experiences into two parts: the experience part, wherein Deanne explores different fields of business, and the leadership part, wherein Deanne takes on leadership roles at Merrill Lynch, Metlife and First State Super. 

 

Having once been in the stage of being an experience gatherer, Deanne explained that it is best not to focus on finding the “perfect role” as a fresh graduate, but rather, explore more about the professional world. After graduating, She joined BT, where she had four roles in the five years she was there. Her various roles allowed Deanne to gain different experiences and an in-depth understanding of operations within the company. 

 

After receiving her MBA from Yale, Deanne pursued a career at McKinsey & Company. She drew attention to the ability to handle complex problems and present the solution with simplicity. Problem-solving, using tools, frameworks and partnerships, was proven to be important in the latter part of Deanne’s career development.

 

Deanne proceeded to take up leadership roles at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where the essence of experiences she had transferred to leadership. The importance of accepting one’s flaws from peer and subordinate feedback was emphasised. Deanne further explained that rather than blaming others, one must use feedback to improve. 

 

Deanne also emphasised the importance of family and well-being while working. She suggested that going lateral or backwards may not necessarily be a bad thing. She reminded the audience that reflection and self-awareness are ways to derive a  purpose to work towards. For Deanne, her purpose is to make a difference, to contribute to the Australian culture and society. To achieve her goals, Deanne decided to become the CEO of MetLife, where she balanced her credibility, executive presence and sponsorship. These are the three characteristics that make a person a leader. 

 

To Deanne, She Means Business is a vision and a future that is not far, as she sees the demand for more women in the Australian business environment. Deanne believes that everyone can make a huge difference in the community. 

 

The night ended on a high, with students’ minds brimming with new ideas and information about the various industries and firms. A highlight was hearing Deanne talk about her experiences and the lessons she learned from trying many different roles, switching industries as well as balancing family with being a successful female CEO. This definitely gave both students and young professionals another perspective on all the possibilities in their career.

Nicola Wakefield Evans

Nicola is an Independent Non-Executive Director of the Lend Lease Group, Toll Holdings Limited, Macquarie Group Limited, Macquarie Bank Limited, BUPA Australia & New Zealand and the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Nicola is a member of the Audit Committees of Macquarie, Lend Lease and BUPA, the Sustainability Committee of Lend Lease, and chairs the Audit Committee at Toll Holdings, the Board Governance and Compliance Committee at Macquarie and the Risk Committee at BUPA.

Nicola is also a Member of the board of Asialink and Asialink Business (University of Melbourne), the University of New South Wales Foundation Limited and the Takeovers Panel.

Nicola is a lawyer and spent nearly 30 years at King & Wood Mallesons (20 years as a partner). Nicola has extensive experience as an equity capital markets and M&A lawyer and has been involved in a number of significant and ground-breaking M&A transactions and has advised some of the largest companies in Australia, Asia and globally. Nicola had several management roles at King & Wood Mallesons including Partner in Charge (Sydney), Managing Partner, Practice (Australia) and Managing Partner, International (Hong Kong) and has lived and worked in Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, New York and Hong Kong.

Nicola was selected in 2009 as a member of Advance Asia 50 – a group of the most influential Australians living & working in Asia and was selected in 2011 as a member of Advance Global 50 – a group of leading Australian women working outside Australia.  Nicola was named in 2013 as one of the inaugural 100 Women of Influence by the Australian Financial Review

Nicola is married to Kym Evans and they have 4 sons.  Nicola’s interests include sailing, walking, music and theatre.

International Women’s Day Breakfast

What a wonderful morning of celebration! On 10 March, UNSW’s Capital W, UTS’ Women in Business, Macquarie’s Women Entering Business, and USYD’s Network of Women collaborated to create an event where men and women came together to ‘Take a Stand’ and #BeBoldForChange. Our panel consisted of:

  • Cindy Hook: CEO at Deloitte
  • Stewart Brentnall: Chief Investment Officer at ANZ
  • Verity Firth: CEO of the Public Education Foundation and former MP
  • Yolanda Beattie: Principal and practice leader for diversity and inclusion practice for Mercer in Australia
  • Scott Wharton: EGM of Strategy and Performance in Enterprise Systems at CBA

Facilitated by Catherine Fox (journalist and former columnist of ‘Corporate Women’ at the AFR Boss Magazine), the panelists discussed the importance of gender equality in the workplace, shared measures their workplaces were taking to obtain this goal, and answered questions from the audience. This was followed by a networking session where students had the chance to ask our panelists questions one on one and meet representatives from our combined 21 sponsors across the four societies.
